The Universe is Shouting

Great theologians have been proven wrong with time. Calvin reportedly called Copernicus something a kin to a glorified astrologer. He claimed to have settled the matter with ‘the text’ (a text Calvin obviously misinterpreted). As much as we love the Apostle Paul, that great man of God would be mystified were we to tell him that God’s world is ‘round’.

I can no longer dismiss the growing evidence. It is time for my own Copernican revolution. The natural world does not lie, and, over time, truth always wins. The Universe not only shouts the glory of God, it also shouts of deep time and deep space. Our planet not only records an amazing history of human accomplishment through brick, steel and glass, but also layer upon layer of entombed rock and bone from the past- clues to God's methods and ways with the natural world.

Let me say it: I was wrong. It was through evolutionary processes that God brought natural things into being.

There, I said it. It's out. And, I am still here- still a 'believer', still a lover of Jesus.

"Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." I'm pretty sure the Bible clearly says that the Earth was created by God in seven days. Faith > Science

Scott, I enjoyed your post and congratulate you on your lucid thinking.

I also read your response to John Piper.

I then read that idiotic post from Anonymous who used Scripture to call you a fool (and I am sure that I mean that he is an idiot in the kindest way possible).

You are not calling the Bible wrong. You are looking at the evidence and pronouncing what is obviously true. The Bible is not a science book; the explanation of Genesis was given to those Bronze Age readers in a form that they could understand.

We no longer sacrifice animals as a means of worship. Does anyone defend that scripture? Of course not.

A thousand years from now, pin head historians will marvel that people of our day said, "The sun came up this morning." They will try vainly to explain why the Sun doesn't revolve around the Earth anymore like it did in our day. They will defend what was written as Truth instead of realizing that this is means of communicating to make it very simple to our fellow humans.

Christians should wallow in the theory of evolution because, when fully presented, it is an incredible method to unfold a planet in His good time.

The Language of God is very instructive in this regard. Written by Frances Collins, the man who lead the mapping of the human genome and a self-professed evangelical, it explains in layman's terms how we ought to view evolution as Christians.

The truth is that those who keep up the myth of creationism are stuck in some ruthless economic-political-cultural theories that cause us to remain enslaved by the forces of free-market Fundamentalism. Its the same sick ideology that powers the Muslim extremists.

It is possible that, within several decades, we can regrow limbs and cure diabetes. Does that mean that God doesn't exist? Of course not. But the election of a hundred Sarah Palins to public office will be the end of the unique American curiosity that has brought us so far from the stone age.

I am glad that you are open about your ideas of evolution. It means youth will not have to listen to a teaching on Sunday and figure out how this relates to their biology class on Monday.

They will no longer have to reject science and math careers simply because they have been indoctrinated into a mythical faith life.

Keep up the good fight.
